The Grand Challenge of Modernizing How We Train America

The Future of Work Grand Challenge, powered by XPRIZE, MIT Solve, New Profit, and JFF, is a $6M initiative to accelerate solutions that can train and place millions of workers into higher-skilled, higher-wage careers. In May of 2021, the top 15 ideas from the Grand Challenge began to conduct deep testing at American Job Centers in six states to ensure that the new technologies not only train people for new skills and jobs of the future—but also lead to meaningful employment, a living wage, and actual job placement. At Horizons 2021, we'll dig deeper into the "so, what?" behind an initiative like the Grand Challenge, tackling questions like: - What are the on-the-ground learnings of this work?  - Who are the people and stories behind the initiative?  - How can the Grand Challenge influence employer, funder, policy, etc. behavior — what must be true for that to happen? - How do we use this moment to accelerate a future of work that works for everyone?

The Big Blur: Reimagining the Transitions Between Grade 11, Postsecondary, and Career

Postsecondary credentials are increasingly necessary to secure jobs that pay family-sustaining wages and that provide opportunities for economic advancement. Yet, the path from high school to college and career is highly fragmented and challenging to navigate, particularly for students who are experiencing poverty and students who are Black, Native American, or Latinx. The divisions between systems were built for a bygone time and not up to the task of producing equitable outcomes for the future of work. The nation needs a radical rethinking and restructuring of current transitions and the assumptions that gave rise to them. In this session, JFF Vice President Joel Vargas will present JFF’s vision for a reimagined transition for response from national leaders in K-12, postsecondary, policy, and business.

Social Networks to Support Social Mobility

While a postsecondary credential is of high value, it’s not a guarantee of a good career. Access to good jobs in today’s fluid economy increasingly favors the knowledgeable and the well-connected. Many young people understand that “networking” and “making connections” are good things. But they and the adults with whom they interact rarely have explicit knowledge about how social capital is developed and how social networks operate. In this session, JFF's Nancy Hoffman provides an overview of social capital and network theory as they apply to labor-market access. It focuses on the barriers and obstacles that low-income job seekers—even those with newly minted degrees aligned with good jobs—need to understand and overcome, especially when moving into fields where there is little diversity in class, race, ethnicity, or gender.

Entry-level roles within the tech sector are occupations with strong wages and career pathways, but women, communities of color, and individuals without bachelor's degrees have had challenges accessing them. This session will identify key tech career pathways in labor markets nationwide, as well as a range of strong onramps strategies for helping these individuals access these pathways. It will also feature NPower, a provider with proven success preparing and placing participants in tech jobs, highlighting the key elements of their model and tips for replicating it. Finally, the session will provide key takeaways on employers’ talent development needs in entry-level tech occupations.

How an Art Project Prepares You for Jobs That Don’t Exist

Robot choreographer Catie Cuan will share what she learned in an artist-in-resident project in which she applied skills that we humans will need as we transition to increasingly automated work environments. Her presentation reinforces the message that learners and workers can draw on their existing skills and learn new ones to co-exist with robots—college degree not required. Catie will also introduce her forthcoming app that people can use to create their own “art projects” and be part of her ongoing work exploring human-robot interactions.
